My partner's daughter was given a kitten as a birthday present a few weeks ago and we're trying to figure out what's the best option to trim his nails. I do not want to have him declawed because I find it extremely cruel and unnecessary. It's not a behavior issue and he doesn't scratch the furniture, but every time he gets on my lap to rest or is playing around, he scratches me because his nails are too long. This is not a huge issue for me, but I'm concerned about my partner's daughter, who is only 9. If he hurts me and makes me bleed with his claws, I don't want to imagine what he could do to her. The kitten is 12 weeks old, by the way.
We do have a scratching post and he uses it a lot. I've heard there're some that also trim the nails as he scratches it, but I was wondering if there were any other options and which one is the best. I know we could clip them ourselves with special clippers, but I'm afraid I won't do it right, or I'll hurt him. I plan on discussing this with the vet, but I would like to find a solution before his next check up, which is in 10 days.
Thank you for the help. ;)
